Fighting Poverty In Newham

Catherine and her family are confronting huge challenges

Catherine is a full time mother of five who lives with her partner and the children in a 2-bedroom flat on the 5th floor of a tower block in Newham.

Since the family are asylum seekers, they have no recourse to public funds, nor can they work due to their resident status. So they are seriously struggling financially to support the children.

Sacha, their youngest, has an 18 month history of being unwell and was recently diagnosed with Lupus at Great Ormond Street Hospital, while her elder brother has a learning disability, as well as other health problems, which means he needs extra support.

Surviving Covid and its restrictions in that small, cramped flat through a cold, hard winter was incredibly tough for them all. With no recourse to public funds Catharine’s family was facing a long and hungry Easter break.

‘The Feed London box gave us all a little bit of hope. Now we feel less alone.’

- Catherine

The Feed London food box arrived on the first day of the holidays filling their fridge and pantry with enough food for at least 7 main meals. The supermarket voucher meant they could stock up on essentials such cleaning equipment, bathroom supplies and even some new clothes.
